Musa just turned one and this is the first time I organised a big birthday party. Since there is no way that he could ask for the theme for himself so I had to make a decision for him. My plan was to make it a theme birthday party but not really in a traditional way with the balloons. I wanted to keep it minimal yet elegant.

Soon I will share my Guide on Birthday Party Planning or download a free Party Planner to go through the process of planning smoothly.

Now let's dive into How you can achieve a beautiful minimal look for a party theme?

Here are few tips that would really help you achieve an elegant minimalist look without having to spend so much money on decoration. I did the same on Musa's birthday that allowed to be more creative and happy with the everything because I really like DIY projects.

Pick a Theme!

Obviously, the first step is to have a clear idea about theme. Good news is any theme is perfect for a minimal party. I selected Rabbit in a Forest theme for Musa's birthday. This idea just randomly crossed my mind and I stuck with it till the end even though I hardly time finding things according to this theme. So my number one advice while picking the theme is to first look around in the place you are living and see what kind of things are available in the market.

Consider Colours!

Once you know about the theme, it is time to think about the colours that go with your theme. Since you are going minimal, think about all the elements where you can use the colour scheme. It could be the dresses, tablewares, linens or plants. Think about all the things you already have at home with the matching colours and how you can use them in your minimalist birthday party.

Since my colour scheme was more inside woods, so green and brown were natural colours that I thought of implementing in the food, in our dresses and in the decoration. I wanted to have a white dress for Musa but would you believe that I couldn't find a nice looking dress for my baby in all Finland. This is the time to emphasise on my first advice to plan well in advance.

Go Classic!

If you have any doubt about colours for the decoration, think about all the neutral and classic colours. Use tableware, table linens and even the decoration in that colour. This is something you can reuse for the lifetime. Finally, think about putting some fresh flowers on the table or put some plants. Can they ever go wrong with the elegant look? I don't think so. Using classical colours will surely help you with the minimalistic birthday party.

I used a table linen that was grey, brown paper plates, a creamy white vase although I couldn't get the flowers as I left it for the last minute. Never leave anything for the last minute :) would be my second advice. Get a day before and put them in water.

Get Creative!

This is a very interesting topic for me in general. How to be more creative? How to think outside the box? A minimalistic birthday party will provide you with the exact opportunity to stretch your creative muscles. Think how you can use food as a decoration or use use your dresses in a way to translate the message of theme. For example, I thought about Musa wearing white dress for the rabbit and us wearing green as forest. In the end, Musa wore more of reddish brown sweater which also kind made it go with the red carrot decor.

You can do some DIY decoration like the ones I have in the picture. Soon I will upload a new video on my YouTube Channel on how to make this decoration.

I also wrapped the gifts for the guest kids in the green paper and they also make natural effortless piece of decoration. My idea was to just put them on the birthday table so everything kind of ties together in the room. It just gives the best feeling.

Play with the food!

Don't play with the food in literal sense. Just Don't! okay? ;) But play with the colour of food according to the theme. I made food in a way that it also made a part of nice decoration and fit the theme. For Musa's birthday theme, I made a carrot cake because Musa was rabbit. Do you see the link? ;)

And then the other food itself was also quite decorative and it already makes the visual appearance of place quite pleasant. It kind of ties the space together. So this also makes the decor more minimalistic. The most food I chose to make was brown going well with the theme and I bought some green kiwi juices and put them in transparent glass bottles for that visually pleasant effect. A nice orange pop was coming from the carrot on top of the cake. I kind of matched it with the cheddar cheese in the sandwich sticks which also had green cucumber slice. I chose feta spinach pastries for the green theme. So that's how it all worked out.

Intentional Gifts!

Think about the gift that you will be giving to your child. I bought him a lot of useful things like clothes for winters, jackets and shoes, I gave him one stuffed toy if you can guess what that was? ;) On the box, I wrote some facts about Musa on his birth date. This also helped with the minimalistic look as I didn't have to get a big banner with all the details. It was sitting right next to the gift table.

Also, you could ask your guests to bring you the gift that you need at home. Some of my friends approached me and asked me what kind of gift I wanted. If you are close to them, you can just ask. It's nice to be considerate and modest about what you ask. Don't burden them :)

Digital Invitations!

Finally, I think it's very cool to send out invitations like old times but since we live in a modern world, think about send out digital invitations for a better nicer economical and sustainable choice. This way you can reduce the paper waste. You can use app Canva to make a design that you like.
